Simpsons Road Rage
was released in 2001 to good reviews and sold well over 1 million
copies, putting developer Radical Entertainment on the map. After
that success, VU Games made a deal with FOX and Radical Entertainment
to create the next Simpsons game. That game was The Simpsons Hit
& Run.
The game borrows a lot from the wildly popular
sandbox gameplay that made the Grand Theft
Auto series so successful, but naturally any license that has been
around as long as The Simpsons has plenty of in-jokes and content
to make a funny and original game that deserves the mantle of "Best.
Simpsons game. Ever."
Sales (in U.S.
dollars): $80,680,000
Sales (in units): 2,370,000
In
the game there are icons that appear when a character is highlighted,
as shown by the picture of Lisa in the screenshot below:
What's not known is that shortly before the completion of the game
those icons displayed the 3D versions of the characters, not the
2D version that you see in that screenshot. Here is the old version
of the display with a 3D render of Milhouse:
After some reviews of the near-complete builds of the game, FOX asked that ALL of those
icons that had the 3D versions of the characters (and there were
a lot) be changed to the traditional 2D versions. This was probably
for the best since the 3D characters look pretty funky, but imagine
the hassle it must have been for the developer to change them all
shortly before the game was set to release. That's just the nature of the biz...
